We are the little church by the side of the road where friends meet friends and sinners meet God.

History of St. Peter African Methodist Episcopal Church

The St. Peter A.M.E. Church was organized in 1874, as reported by Bro. J. A. Williams, one of the churches senior members in 1959. The first meeting house for St. Peter African Methodist Episcopal Church was located on the site where the present Tunica County Court House is now located. The parsonage was across the street where the Dulany and Dulany’s attorney at law is now located. The Meeting house was a two story building. The building burned at the turn of the century.

In 1916 the members of St. Peter built a brick church where the present church is located (2038 Old Highway 61). This new brick building stood only a few years before it was destroyed by fire.

In 1920, the members of St. Peter built a frame building on the same foundation. Rev. Gordon was the pastor. The frame church building stood until 1930. In the midst of The Great Depression, the members built a concrete block church, using the same foundation of the first church. Rev. C. McCloud was the pastor.

In 1959 the members remodeled the block church (Rev. G. A. A. Jones, Pastor). The church was dedicated by Bishop F. D. Jordon. In the wake of the redevelopment and the changing of times under the leadership of Rev. C. L. Woodley, the pastor and members began discussing a new church in 1977.

In 1980, with new goals urging them to look forward potentially to a greater rewarding community service the pastor and members met with Rev. L. L. Guy (Presiding Elder) and decided to build a new St. Peter. This new church was completed and dedicated March 15, 1981. Dedication services were done by Bishop Frank C. Cummings, Pastor C. C. Metcalf, and Rev. F. C. Stallworth, Presiding Elder.

In 1988, Bishop Donald G. Ming met with pastor C. D. Raggs and officers of St. Peter and opened St. Peter Outreach Center located across the street from the church.

This center served the needs of the people of Tunica County with food, clothing and toys until 1994. With jobs opening up, the center closed its doors but the church continued to operate a kitchen pantry until January 2002.The church is working on opening up a food pantry and thrift store in the near future.

More details will be given as we get closer to these goals. We value your help and input.
